Bridge project concerns Corunna

CORUNNA- Leaders of Corunna want to keep a new bridge project from disrupting their town — even if that means delaying it.
A dozen town leaders and residents met Saturday with state Sen. Dennis Kruse to tell him their complaints about the project.
The Indiana Department of Transportation is planning to replace the S.R. 327 bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad this summer.
The bridge will be much longer than the present span. Corunna residents are unhappy because the new bridge will cut off access to several buildings along S.R. 327, including the town’s post office.
The town cannot afford the cost of moving water and sewer lines for the bridge project, Town Council members told Kruse.
Corunna citizens also worry about the condition of an unofficial detour. Local residents will use narrow C.R. 11 to get from one side of town to the other. Two large vehicles cannot pass on the road, townspeople said.
In response to those concerns, “INDOT has made no effort. In fact, they have ignored the Town of Corunna,” said Town Councilman Jay Christian.
Kruse promised to meet with the new chairman of INDOT soon. He asked Christian to give him a letter listing all of the town’s problems with the bridge project.
DeKalb choir takes show’s top trophy

Sound Sensation captured the prize for best choreography to go with its grand-champion trophy.
Classic Connection earned honors for best instrumental combo and best stage crew, along with a best female soloist award for Laura Garman.
Eisenhower High School of Decatur, Ill., narrowly edged Classic Connection for the grand championship in the mixed division.

WATERLOO- Students and staff members at DeKalb Middle School will “Make Every Move Count” when they compete in a week-long national fitness competition beginning Monday.
After submitting a written application, the school has been selected as a semifinalist in the competition. It will compete against 19 other schools across the country to accumulate the most steps during one school week.
The “Make Every Move Count” program is a partnership between VERB and Channel One News.
VERB is a campaign created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is designed to help students age 9-13 get physically active and have fun doing it.
Channel One News is a national news broadcast that DeKalb Middle School students watch for 15 minutes each day.
For the contest, staff members and students will use pedometers to monitor the steps they take each day. DeKalb Middle School has received 1,500 pedometers for the competition, said principal Tom Sanborn.
